Comprehensive XFL Betting Guide

The new XFL launched in 2020, giving football fans and bettors some action to fill the gaping hole of boredom and madness caused by the NFL and NCAAF's offseason.

A product of Vince McMahon’s Alpha Entertainment and now owned by Redbird Capital Partners and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson," the XFL is more than just a redux of the original 2001 league that folded after just one season. This league has been planned out for years, and it’s positioned to enhance and complement the NFL, not compete with it.

The reimagined XFL football league is vying to be a legitimate minor league operation for the NFL, giving a platform to undrafted players, NFL roster cut casualties and other pro ballers that would otherwise be out of the game.

XFL Rules: The Difference Between XFL and NFL Football

Fans what to know: Is there a real difference between NFL and XFL action? Well, pal, the answer is yes! In fact, aside from both leagues being based on American football, they actually have more differences than similarities.

While this isn’t the be-all and end-all all XFL vs. NFL playbook, we’ve highlighted a few of the main XFL rules that should be of most interest to new fans and bettors.

    • Faster Pace – The league has a shorter play clock at 35 seconds compared to the NFL’s 40 seconds. The clock also will not stop for incompletions, and halftime is only 10 minutes long.
    • No Ties – There are no tie games in the XFL, with the league utilizing a shootout-style overtime format. Each team gets a turn to score on a single play from the five-yard line. There is a max of three rounds.
    • Extra Points – There are no kicking PATs in the XFL. Instead, after a TD, the scoring team can choose to run a play from the two-yard line (one point), five-yard line (two points), or 10-yard line (three points).
    • One Foot = Two Feet – In the NFL, receivers need to have both feet in bounds for a completed catch. In the XFL, they only need one foot in bounds.
    • Forward Double Pass – Any pass completed behind the line of scrimmage can be thrown forward again by the receiving player. As such, what would be a fumbled lateral in the NFL will now be an incompletion in the XFL.
    • Instant Replay - Each XFL coach gets one replay challenge per game. All other replays will be initiated by a central XFL booth, and pretty much anything can be reviewed, including penalties.
    • Keep The Ball - In addition to performing an onside kick attempt, the XFL now allows for another way to keep possession of the ball after a score. In the 4th quarter only, scoring teams can try to convert a 4th and 15 from their own 25 and get to keep the ball if they are successful.
    • Clock Management - Unless it is inside of the final two minutes of the half, the clock will continue to run after the conclusion of each play, including incomplete passes. Also, during the final two minutes of the 2nd and 4th quarters, the clock will stop after first downs are achieved.
